It really depends on WHY they quit.  If something happened IRL (in real life), then I can understand that you do what needs to be done and the game comes 2nd.  Another forgivable reason was just last night for me when a person  who didn't know how to play joined and ended  up quitting on the 2nd or 3rd round.  I think the fairest way is to post on the forum, and then they have opportunity to defend themselves.  Also not a bad idea to just avoid playing games with such a person.

I play a lot on BSW http://www.brettspielwelt.de/?nation=en which is simply means "Boardgame World" in german.  It's a cardinal sin there to quit the game before it comes to completion so I've gotten used to playing games till the end.

Had ANOTHER Host stop a game in the 10th round because he made a boneheaded move! I have had a rash of Hosts ending games and really adding up my abandoned stat! I keep a list of guys next to my computer that are quitters or troublemakers and the list is getting quite long and i have only played 20 games! Tired of QUITTERS !!! About ready to just play against 3 AI and forget humans!

Whenever possible - try to go with hosts who have higher ranking and LOTS of games - if a host closes the game - the players DO NOT get an abandoned - only if you leave or are kicked - played one with Rho that he closed in 9th month (By Mutal Agreement of all players) and did not get an abandon - also I have restarted games when people have techie issues early in the game and when I do - the host gets an abadon not the players - as long as the players dont leave before host closes game.

Hopefully you re-think that 3 AI no human idea...don't let a few bad apples ruin the game for you.

Beware of CDay!  He likes to quit when things don't go his way and he is disrespectful in lobby chat.
Here is the proof of quitting

Sorry cday, having played over 300 games here at Planet MULE and played a SIGNIFICANT NUMBER of those games against Rhodan, I would like to believe that there is some sort of misunderstanding here

I have never had Rhodan quit one of my games even if he seems to not be doing well and I have never had any trouble playing in his games.

I really do not think that Rhodan would quit a game for losing....if you were being abusive or ignorant, then, perhaps I can see him quitting..."just because he is not doing well..." - Rhodan would not quit for that reason.

As to IM...well the original game had us all in the same room anyways - so I do not really think that is a big deal - if players want to do that and collude, that is their issue, not mine, as I play to pass the time in the evenings.

Having played MOST of my games against players such as Brad1867, Rhodan, rodz and the like, I can see no evidence of collusion from Rhodan or any of the veteran players.
