I still get the slowdown at the start of each round just before the landgrab in version 1.2.4.
I can stop it by switching the sound off and on again, but next round the same thing happens. The game doesn't try to catch up like it did in the last version, so it is going steadily once I turned the sound on again. I'm on xp and only tried it locallly with 3 AIs.
Thanks for the improvement in the new version, hope it will work completely for me someday.

Sometimes the AI takes a long time to decide what to do at the start of the land grab. Does this happen even if you play without AI opponents and are you sure that switching on and off the sound helps? I've noted this for investigation nonetheless.

When I turn the sound off from the beginning the slowdown doesn't occur. It definitely goes straight back to normal when I switch the sound, I have yet to try it with only human players, but in the last version it was the same there.

Ok. Thanks for the report. We didn't do anything to correct this issue in the last update, except moving to only one sound system, so I'm not surprised if there still can be slowdowns. We'll investigate it and hopefully we can correct it in future releases.

yup I can also confirm this is still the case on my windows XP Pro machine as well. It has the latest java installed.  Right before the land grab it slows down to a crawl, I also notice it happen on the first round right as the mother ship takes off.  The cpu usage skyrockets, and until I turn off the sound and back on then it is slow as dirt.

Note: I do not experience this on my Vista ultimate machine.
