I went to the FAQ, but couldn't make heads or tails of it.  (If I need to purchase something fancy, I'd rather not.)

Is it possible to get some step-by-step instructions to figure out how to host?  (I was already able to finish a game hosted by someone else, so that's not a problem.)

Fortunately, you don't need to purchase anything. You need to access the administration panel of your router and add a port forward to your local IP address. How to do this depends on your router model but most models are covered at www.portforward.com.

I added this to the FAQ:

   1.  Select your router from the list of routers on the first page of www.portforward.com.
(Routers usually have a sticker with its name and model number printed on it.)
   2. After selecting router click the Default Guide link in the text area at the top.
   3. Follow the instructions to forward port 6260 to your computer.

I hope that makes it a little clearer.

When I typed in 192.168.1.1, it sent me to 'Verizon Wireless Gateway', which isn't on their list.

I wasn't sure exactly where to go or what to click.

Any suggestions?

Now it seems to be worse; I can't get into anyone else's game now.  I was able to do so yesterday.

EDIT: I got it to join, by lowering the firewall (which I didn't think I'd have to do).

Turning off your firewall doesn't seem to be a reasonable thing to be required to do, even for a free game. Does anyone have a better reference fo rport forwarding. I've forwarded TCP/UDP port 6260 traffic to host port 6260 and I tried to any host port, I've tried forwarding router port traffic both ways (as above) still not luck any suggestions?

Forwarding ports may be not the only thing. If theres a firewall in place too, additional you need to open these ports in firewall configuration.
