When the game makes a decision between two people because of Rank it would help if the system popped a message saying something like "Dweeb was granted the Plot because of a lower rank then Dork"

Same in auctions "Dweeb was given the buy because of a lower rank then Dork"

I'm not trying to be nosy or argumentative, but why would this be important during play? If it's already happened, you should be able to figure out why pretty quickly.

Simple.... because when you click a plot and someone else gets it, or you reach the line on an auction before someone else yet they get the trade it gives the impression that the software is buggy and makes people frustrated....

It wasn't until I assumed it was a bug and complained during a game that someone told me it was actually a feature... how many more people think the software is buggy and walk off grumbling rather then continue to play?

Actually, in the Beginner's Guide this is explained (why rank matters and how it can affect things). It just needs to be more prominently displayed to new players (or replace the How-To-Play section altogether).

i think its a valid suggestion and could help make the game mechanic more transparent.

I agree that it is a valid suggestion, but I also agree with Zach that players should be able to figure this out on their own.  If they can't, or if they are too dumb to ask someone, or if they decide they don't like the rule and never come back, I won't miss them too much.  Kiss

I think a sound effect would be sufficient to address this, personally.  Any text message would be too distracting, as the player is certainly focused on the plots and not the rest of the window during this occasion.

Keeping the existing happy "chirp" sound when one successfully claims a plot and adding some sort of falling failure sound effect when one loses the contested plot would be a sufficient cue to what's going on, I believe.

User feedback is super important -- I totally agree with the suggestion.

I agree with Paladinian, if something is added to the plot selection it should be some kind of sound.  I dunno what could be done about the auctions tho...

I don't think a sound is necessary.  Why not just have it put a message in the chat/log window that says it, just so players know?  Seems like a perfect use of a log window to me.  Wink

I like log windows - you can get all the info you want about the game without it actually injecting any unneeded information into actual gameplay.

That's a good suggestion (log window that shows "things that happened", e.g. "Player developed plot #3,2 with Smithore"). Please start a new thread for it!

The chat/log suggestion is already in the sticky http://www.planetmule.com/forum?topic=482.0

"Display additional game information in the chat window, such as events that occur or important statistics."

I suppose that maybe we should make a new thread about which specific events to log in the chat window.  Hmm...

Ok, you twisted my arm!   Grin

With regard to the original topic here though, I think adding it to the game rules web page should be sufficent enough. IMO the game doesnt need to clarify a reason why everything happens.  If it did, it would be more like an Infocom text adventure.

When software acts contrary then expected or instructed by a user then the user's gut reaction is to believe it is buggy.

Tell me you read all the docs before the first time you played...

It is simple: new player sitting at the computer evaluating the game as they play the first time, they are sure they were first to the line on an auction, they watch 2 other people buy out the store and they don't get the thing they were trying to buy, they say "screw this buggy game" and they never come back.

You can throw out any RTFM type arrogance you want but reduced player base because of perceived bugs in the game does nothing but extend the time we sit around waiting for games.
