Central Standard Time Zone (UTC/GMT -6 hours)
I'm pretty flexible...
Mondays and Tuesdays are bad, but can be open most other days/nights.

Hi! Unfortunately my schedule is not that flexible since I'm not allowed to play before my kid goes to bed... ;(
My timezone is GMT-3 (Brazil), currently 2 hours behind Irata time. So in Irata time, the best hour would be 22:00 although not on Mondays, Tuesdays or Thursdays.
Nevertheless, although there are very good players not yet top-ranked (I know, I have lost to quite a many) due lack of games or other reasons, it would make a very interesting setup to have a top-10 only or top-20 only tournaments. So I hope we can arrange them.
BR, piete

I started this thread far too early/late this morning. So let me flesh this out a bit; now that I'm more awake. Drilan and I were chatting after a game. His wish was to play a game with piete, gunnar, and myself. This led to a discussion about organizing top 10 or top 20 player only tournaments. Drilan also suggested potentially having prizes or having each player put money into a pool for a cash prize. While I don't know about having prizes and such (seems complicated to execute), I really like the idea of tournaments for top players.
I also agree with piete about very good players yet to be top-ranked. Many exist, and I would like to include them somehow. But, I am not sure about how to make that happen.
Anyway, hopefully something good grows out of this. If this thread simply creates times where good players gather, I will consider it a success.

If such a gathering were to exist, I would not like the results from said games to count towards overall rankings; otherwise, it would be an obvious nod towards driving a wedge between those who have high rank and those who do not. I understand wanting to play games where everyone knows exactly what's going on and such, but there's no need to be elitist (not that I'm implying that is what is being expressed here, at all).

I agree with you regarding elitism, but with current ranking system there shouldn't be a problem, after all, only one player gets a ranking point. I just participated one such game, was 3rd so no points for me (actually the lowest-ranked won), spent 1,5 hours having a good game but if I had wanted a sure point I could have played with beginners...

I also have a hard time scheduling this but often I'm looking for a game around 04:00 irata time.
Fortunately, the top 10 is less and less important for the game quality as more players get games under their belts. I've had success recently beating the top players, then then I think I fell to the #67 or something. I admit that I was also in some games where a ~#130 or something did some bizarre, useless things throughout the game such that you wondered if they were serious, and it took away from the game. BigHeadZack, I think understand where you are going but sometimes it is nice to see how you sit compared to the other players in a current system where there is a strong reward just for playing, and playing newbies is equivalent to beating 3 other knowledgeable players. I personally oscillate between taking solace in a good colony score and just playing FTW.

people are definitely getting better.... it's great because it makes the game more interesting... it's too easy to beat people that don't know the nuances of the game and people that f*ck around and then bail on an early round to get an AI player in it
