In the original M.U.L.E. the A.I. would often re-develop its land to take advantage of food, energy or MULE shortages.  It would even convert its smithore plots to crystite at the end of the game since MULES were no longer being purchased and smithore prices fell.

Planet M.U.L.E. A.I. will often just set it and forget it.  I've seen them keep 8 plots dedicated to energy all the way to the end, even though it was selling for 10 the entire time.

Hopefully, the A.I. can be improved to use its time wisely and reconfigure their plots in anticipation of shortages.

Yup, this is definitely the case.

And yup, while the original AI wasn't good at predicting the smithore crash, it did react to it by moving away from that commodity into the next best (usually Crystite in tiles having any)
