is it possible for 2 players to play each other on one computer? (i.e. like the atari version allows up to 4 simultaneous players)

It probably could be, if someone put their mind to it, but the most ideal way to do that would be using a game pad interface with support for multiple game pads.

At this point there hasn't really been enough interest in adding the feature to justify it's addition.
