In one recent game I was bying a plot , I was leading the bidding and had enough money to raise the price until the time runs out...then all of the sudden one player made the winning bid even though I was raising the bid as fast as I could (had the up arrow down all the time).

What happened? Can I do the same myself or is this some bug/cheat Huh

Were you in last place? A tie in the land auction goes to the player with the lower overall score.

There are exceptions to this rule, namely getting victimized by a latency issue. Sometimes a player with bad lag can win an auction. Unfortunately I don't think there's anything anyone can do about that case.

No, I was not on the last place, and, as I remember, neither was the player who won the auction.

The thing is that the player that was bidding second was clearly behind me (maybe some 50$) but then he just jumped past me in the dying seconds of the auction even though I was still raising the bid.

He wrote SPACEBR in the chat, does that have something to do with what happened? Can you make a 'extra high'  bid just by pressing spacebar during the bidding...?

I am pretty certain that this phenonemen is caused by lag. Players will see themselves in front, and seen to be overtaken in the last second. But the reality is that although you see yourself in front, the players are actually on the same level according to the hosting bot. The other player too would probably see himself in front of you on his screen. However, At the end of the auction this lag will be gone and it looks as if the player who was behind made a quick jump at the end, overtaking you eventhough you kept running all the time. There is no cheating involved. This happens more to players in Europe than in the U.S. because the hosting bots are on a server in the U.S.

Because of lag it is also possible to miss some cycles and then you can't even keep up with the others in a land auction. I've been miles behind and still dropping too many times. :-(

Actually the people in europe should win the land race BEFORE the north american players as there ping is higher. Grandpappysmurf wins like 90% of land races when I play him because he lives in NZ and has a ping of 250 average every game. If anyone has beaten pappy in a strait land race...pls post the game here. I really want to see it.

Lag cause a lot of grief with land sales, so a lag adjustment was made in the auctions to try to give people with more lag a more even chance, but people with a lag that just barely crosses the threshold set by the server actually get preference over players with a shorter ping.  The way it's set up, players with a 350ms ping have equal chance with players with 50ms ping as near as I can figure.  Anyone with more than 250, but less than 350 has a good chance of winning a land raise even when you look like you're ahead of them.

And that's just one of the many reasons why the ranking system has no credibility whatsoever.

Doesnt matter what place your in, If your racing "grandpappysmurf" (average ping 250), he will always win the land race. His next smurf should be called roadrunner, no joke
