Is there any way to change what species you are or is it "set once and that's it"?

For the time being, it looks like species are set. However, I believe the devs have mentioned being able to change it later, especially when they get to the point where they start making them have different abilities in the game itself.

Big Head Zach is right. What I wanna know is whether what character one chooses affects gameplay. I'd test it out, but I don't have time to play right now.

It currently does not change your abilities. There's far off plans of adding unique statistics per race, but they're far from implemented.
