I have the setting to view the A.I. moves enabled and it's great to see them run out of time!
However, when time is almost out I've had the computer buying mules and outfitting them, or running to their land, with literally a sliver of time left... Not very smart if you ask me! (it sure helps me though!)

Also, there have been times when the computer has no money and sits in the shop waiting for something... but doesn't move until time is running out... then runs out right to the Wumpus without looking?! (CHEATER!! this has happened a few times!)

Lastly, the computer sure does like to switch out it's M.U.L.E.s a lot! Like every turn they're switching and making stupid moves! (changing to all food, changing to all energy)
In the meantime they've got empty plots but are messing with ones already established... dumb!!

Maybe you can incorporate a difficulty setting?! Let it do these stupid things on "Easy" and more strategy on "Hard"?

Yes, the AI is very stupid, we try to play with 4 real people to avoid using it, if you're gonna play single player with AI, download an Atari or C64 emulator, and download the original game from a emulator game site and play that.  It's a bit better, although, the AI never was incredibly bright, the planet M.U.L.E. ai has some major bugs, some functions work in reverse to the way they are supposed to.

Programming AI is difficult & it's a great testament to Dani & the crew what they were able to do given the hardware parameters of machines of their era.
