Land auctions: Very touchy feedback

Trying to enter a desired price for a land auction bid is very hard.
Specifically, trying to (while someone else is inching up behind you) get up to $948, without reaching $952, on turn 1, for a plains plot, etc.
(I'm starting to question whether a first turn plot is worth that much. But I do know that $952 and forced food is really painful when you run out of energy on turn 2.)
