OK I fixed it.  I had re-installed the proprietary by hand.  So I un-installed all the video drivers and then re-installed them using the System-Administration-Hardware Drivers menu.  Worked like a charm.

I do have the proprietary drivers installed.  It's an ATI radeon hd3400 series.  I downloaded the newest drivers from the ATI website and installed them yesterday.  Of course I could have botched that up.

so inspite of my updating the video driver i still get a Failed to initialize LWJGL Display. when starting up.
any help would be appreciated.

I'm having a similar problem.  Actually it started out exactly the same so I followed the instructions.
now I get an error that says
"/mule/data/lib/liblpsolve55j.so :liblpsove55.so :wrong ELF class: ELFCLASS32"

I even tried downloading the files from the previous post directly all to no avail.

I'm new to Linux so please be kind in your responses
