El Chapo: no way to know for sure, but the only chance for the country to heal after civil war would have required freed slaves to not just get political rights but also to have land they owned outright. that was the whole deal for being a free citizen at the time, as Lincoln himself believed
El Chapo: and you get buy-in from the poor southern white people by bringing them in on the deal, equally. they had been oppressed and abused by southern gentry as well
El Chapo: what you don't do is: give back political rights and estates to traitors just because they say "I promise not to do it again," which was all that Pres. Johnson required
El Chapo: but in all of this, it would also have been necessary to do a page 1 rewrite of the constitution, and I don't think that would have happened under anyone but maybe Lincoln's leadership.
