Is anybody here using satellite for their Internet connection?  If so, has the slower speed affected game play for you?

I tried to get into my first game last night but it was abandoned by the other players because everything was so slow and I wonder if my connection is to blame.

Well, I'm using a dial-up connection (6kb p/sec), my ping is usually around 300ms, sometimes it can get a bit slow, but if I keep the whole connection just for the game, it works decently. That is, consider not using any web browser, chat/messaging program, download managers, p2p, etc... and let the game leech the whole connection. If it works for me, it should work for you too.

Check your ping in several games and compare. Other users can also affect your game speed, so it is not always because of the one with the slowest connection.

Should you remember that $20 is a magic number too.

Ping times on Satellite would be horrendous.  (I expect 600ms at best)  Virtually unplayable, Satellite fast, sure for large streams, but response time for a game that relies on low pings, might as well throw it out the door, dial up would be faster.
