Planet Mule 1 / Planet M.U.L.E. 1 Discussion / Re: Land Auction Price Bidding

pushing land prices high is not cheating, often its a very strong defensive mechanic against richer players who would buy land for far less than its worth. i dont even think authenticity needs to be invoked here, i think this is a good mechanic on its own

Planet Mule 1 / Bugs 1.2.0 / graphics stuttering
|

I am using Windows 7 ultimate, nvidia drivers. Sometimes the game will start to stutter, and it will not go away. It is not clear why this starts happening. The effect looks like about every ~1 second, the frames will freeze for maybe 1/10 second, and then skip ahead. I have looked for some other application that might be causing this but it seems to be something with windows because I can't make it go away.

ELO is a very good system but it only works for 2 player contests. It doesn't even really make sense in multiplayer games.
On the contrary, it works quite well for Settlers of Catan, which is a 3-4 player game. They use it at http://games.asobrain.com and people seem happy with it. They also do not allow multiple users from the same IP to play ranked games. FYI. I've played xplorers a lot, but I don't think their ranking system works very well and as such I don't use it. I'd like to play xplorers with some mule people though!

Without getting into the mathematical details of it, I would recommend an ELO type rating system similar to the kind used on games.asobrain.com for their Xplorers game. It eliminates a lot of possibilities of cheating the ranks. For example, they don't allow ranking against computer opponents. Also, they reduce points gained for playing against repeat opponents. Players from the same IP address are not allowed in ranked games. Etc. etc. More details about their ranking system is on their site if you wish to take a look. Their Xplorers game is a Settlers of Catan clone, if anyone is interested in that.
As a reference, ELO ranking makes a calculation of ranking points based on (some of) the the following parameters:
Diffence in current ranking score How thick you have beat your opponent How many times you already played against your opponent
However, IMHO, competition in MULE is really unique to each individual game played. I'm not sure there is any fair way to calculate who the "best" player is.
ELO is a very good system but it only works for 2 player contests. It doesn't even really make sense in multiplayer games. currently, the ranks are calculated each 24 hours upon the following data:
games won, ratio, games played, hi-score.
If anyone has a good idea how to make the ranking more fairly balanced or interesting for new players (like a weighted system between games won, ratio and highest score and probably colony score), we like to hear it!
Is the formula a secret?

People playing on a router should be able to play games. Also people have even talked about multiple people playing from the same computer. I think those should be considered.

My MULE is not even close to full screen and there is nothing wrong with my drivers. It is about 4x the area of the original screen. It is big enough but there is so much room around it, there should be chat to the right side or something.

Well what I was originally hoping for was to watch videos of someone else's game and give commentary. It is a lot more interesting when you don't know the outcome of the game and can speculate on what is happening before the game ends. If anyone wants to record their games and send me particularly interesting ones I would like to try commenting on them and putting them on my youtube account.

M.U.L.E. Community / Website, Ranks & Forum / I would really like to see some game statistics

I like the sector map and would like to see more info about tournament games.
Specifically, I think it would be useful to see how many games have been played per day, and some information about scores, average number of players, game length, etc. Presumably all of this information is kept in the awesome game logs that are already recorded, so I am guessing this would be possible to do. I think this would be a really cool way to take a look at the metagame and compare with release dates and look at the growth of the game.
Thanks for your work devs and keep it up!!
