Some sources say that the original Atari version in tournament mode had the players start with 2 energy while other say it was 4. Can anyone verify this and also verify the number of energy to start with in the Commodore 64 version?

I remember it was less than 4 on C64 too, can't check right now at work but maybe it was 2...

I did comment this in some game chat a while ago but forgot to write about it at forum. Sorry ;)

If i start a tournament game on C-64 emulator with 3 A.I. and me as Legitte,
it shows in the first auction to have all mechtrons 2 Energy and me 4.

Can anyone confirm and does that make sense?

Sorry, I just checked again, it is 2 for all players, so in my upper posting it must have been the food/energy bonus package from homeworld in first round...  ::)

So I would say 2 energy is correct.

The classic game started with 2 energy.
