Title: C64 - What are the most awesome games YOU played in the 80's?
Post by: rommager on January 15, 2010, 22:44
It goes without saying that M.U.L.E. is one of the top of the top C64 games, but there were so many great games for the good ole 64.  What are some of your favorites?  When you answer, also please state your country.  I have seen different favorites in Europe, where the 64 had a much longer and happier life.

I am in USA - A few of mine faves include:
Bruce Lee
Impossible Mission
Conan
Racing Destruction Set
Super Pipeline
Boulder Dash Construction Kit
Spy vs Spy
Caveman U'gh Lympics
Dragon's Lair
California Games

Atari

And nobody mentioned Kennedy Approach, this game is at least as ingenious as M.U.L.E., and was available on both Atari and C64 ;)

By the way, there is a very nice remake of KA, check http://www.microprose.nl/home.php (http://www.microprose.nl/home.php)

Turrican 2 killed all platform games for me.  Since It was perfect, I see  no point to play any other platform game.  Also, Turrican 2 was Epic in scale and deep, in a time where Epic was a rarely used word.

Tie Fighter killed space games for me.. but thats another history.

I mostly played Turrican 2 on the AMIGA. The soundtrack is legendary, Chris Hülsbeck and Jochen Hippel created the 7-voice-routine for Turrican II, a true gaming audio milestone. I recorded it to tape and listened to it on my walkman back then, and I still like to listen to it today  :)

Given the genre's small offerings on the Commodore 64, if it wasn't Autoduel, it's likely you were playing "Roadwar 2000" (http://www.lemon64.com/games/details.php?ID=2148) or its sequel "Roadwar Europa" (http://www.lemon64.com/games/details.php?ID=2149) instead.

Never played it, but that definitely sounds like the premise in "Time Tunnel" (http://www.lemon64.com/games/details.php?ID=2661).

I still play C64 games from time to time on an emulator (Power64). The turn-based "Lords of Conquest" (http://www.lemon64.com/games/details.php?ID=1543) would probably appeal to a lot of MULE fans, I suspect; it's like a customizable 'deluxe' version of the boardgame Risk, and was also similarly enjoyable to play with three other players.

What was REALLY fun back then, though, were the graphics and game editing utilities. A good-sized chunk of my adolescence was spent writing stories, creating graphics and working out programming in Activision's "Gamemaker" (http://www.lemon64.com/games/details.php?ID=1027) and EA's "Adventure Construction Set" (http://www.lemon64.com/games/details.php?ID=3013). Some years back I conducted a 'salvage operation' and converted all my old five-inch Commodore floppies into emulator-readable disk images (http://www.mindspring.com/~tgordo/whatever.html); it was totally worth it...

Decathlon...  ...oh man, that one, you could literally break a sweat!  Like the first video game ever to actually give you physical exercise, how fast can you move that joystick!  Circles at lightspeed, oh man, I have to take a break after a game of decathelon, my arms hurt, lol.

Lately I tend to play Satans Hollow, Dino Eggs, Archon, Fort Apocalypse, or Space Taxi. Sometimes Gateway to Apshai. lol
