Title: Can't start the game, login screen disappears
Post by: TBird on May 22, 2011, 21:30
Hi, my specs first:

Win Vista 32 bit (all patches)
Ati Mobility 2600XT (latest drivers)
Intel Core 2 Duo
2 GB Ram

I downloaded the game und unpacked it, but when I try to start it, the login screen comes up for about a second and then disappears, as if someone had cancelled it. Is this a known problem or did I maybe overlook something ?

Thanks for you help  :)

Upload the log file (Should be in the Mule Folder under Data\log.txt and Data\log_init.txt)

Hi,

In the game folder there is only a log_init.txt file available, but I was able to attach that.

Sound Driver Issue - Check to see if your sound drivers are upto date.

Installed the latest Realtek Audio Drivers, but problem still persists.

Are you getting the latest drivers from your notebook website, or from the chipset manufacture's site?

I found sony's website most current drivers for my notebook would not work with mule.  I had to get drivers straight from intel's site instead to get my computer to run mule, as intel had released more current drivers, they just were custom tailored to my computer, however, I have yet to find any features missing from the generic driver and my games all work better.

Also, I had problems with my sound driver, that caused my computer to stutter and found that Dell's newest version of the driver for the same sound card works better then the driver provided by Sony, so my Sony uses Dell drivers, and only bug to that it, it doesn't auto switch output ports when I plug in headphones now, so I have to stop and restart audio to get it to play through the desired port, small price to pay to have the sounds play without stuttering.

Beyond that, I'm at a loss for what to do.

I'd start with Intel's website, uses their automatic driver update scanner.  If that doesn't find appropriate drivers, try to find a download for your specific sound card with google search to find another computer that uses the same sound chipset (as Realtek doesn't provide generic drivers, you usually have to cheat and find another notebook manufacture with a more upto date version of the driver for the same chips.)

Lastly, if you get the sound side working, and still find video issues, get drivers straight from ATI's website.

Also, many have reported that ATI drivers tend not to update properly unless you fully remove the old version first, and the driver uninstaller usually doesn't do it.  There is another post in the bug forum somewhere that addresses how to do this properly so updated drivers install correctly to let mule run.

Actually Realtek does provide generic drivers, I was able to download a driver 5/2011 for Realtek HD Audio directly from their website. Same with the ATI drivers.

Thanks for all your input, but I am giving up. I have probably run over 40 games on this Laptop and never had any display or sound issues that were driver related, same with video or audio editing software.
There is only so much time I am willing to invest into getting a single game to run and see if I actually like it. I'll just bookmark this site and come back if I get a new laptop at some point in the future to try again.

Wow, realtek has front end support now?  That's nice, wasn't that way a few months ago.

Well, bummer, maybe Peter will see this thread eventually and do some research, as I am just a fellow muley and not a programmer, I've exhausted my ideas, just appears from the log that the game can not initialize your sound.

TBird, I suggest you try to re-downlaod the game and close all programs running in the background. For example your web browser and any music and video players. The game may have created a file called "hs_err_pid" at the same location as the log file. If that's the case please post it here.

From the log I see that the game crashed while trying to access your sound card and play the intro music. I suggest you try to download new sound drivers from your vendor. I guess you're using a notebook so new drivers might be available at the notebook manufacturer's website.

I hope that solves the problem for you. Please reply if it did.

Tom, Intel's website probably has a driver that will work.  Personal experience has taught me that chip manufacture's direct drivers usually function better and are more compatible than oem manufacture websites, so try Intel's support site rather than Dell's since you appear to be using an Intel chipset for your video and audio.

Goodluck!

Intels website has a "detect my drivers for me" option in the support downloads section.  It will walk you through it.

http://downloadcenter.intel.com/default.aspx?lang=eng (http://downloadcenter.intel.com/default.aspx?lang=eng)

Click on Run Intel Driver Update Utility.  It will walk you through it.  Any problems such as it telling you to contact your manufacture, let me know and I'll help you get around it.
