I think this would be a good idea. You mean that the AI should have something like 15-25 different strategies and a few difficulty levels (classic: easy, medium, hard) which leads the AI to be a bit different in every game.
Also it should be able to recognize different types of strategies.
 For example:
Players a,b,c and d are playing. A is the host. A decides to kick D out of the game because he has all the smithore and he knows that the prizes will be wrecked down if AI takes over. So, with the upgraded AI, the bot would recognize what D was aiming to and doesn't sell all of the smithore 50$/unit.
Or something like that... improvements would be nice.

No, I guess he talks about SPECIES. So, I guess he is tired of playing versus Mechatrons and wants to select any other alien to play against them. That way he can "pretend" to be playing with his/her/its online friends. Or maybe he is tired of playing as an ape-oid in single player training all the time as I do.

It would give more variety to play, however original M.U.L.E. game always chose Mechatrons as COM players, so you were forced to play against human-controlled players to watch those species. Actually, we can just play against a non-Mechatron AI when a player is disconnected, and then the seat is taken over by the AI. But I guess that selecting different species for single player AIs would be nice. Or even for the player, I hate being an ape everytime I have to play it locally. =^ò_ó^=

Should you remember that $20 is a magic number too.
