Most of us here are knowledgeable enough to figure this out. But here are some pointers for some truly novice users.
Step 1 - Download your flavor of Planet M.U.L.E. from the download page. Step 2 - EXIT THE BROWSER - Yes, EXIT THE INTERNET - The game does NOT RUN FROM HERE Step 2 - Unzip/Unpack Mule on your PC Step 3 - Run MULE from the folder you unzipped/unpacked too. Step 4 - Click Register - This will reopen the internet, create your account, follow the steps to verify it. Step 5 - EXIT THE BROWSER - Yes, EXIT THE INTERNET - The game does NOT RUN FROM HERE Step 6 - Go back to the screen where you clicked Register, it should still be running. Step 7 - Login - This will open a chat window with games to join.
You may now join a game by clicking on it and clicking join game (or simply double clicking on the game) or create a new game. We recommend new players play a few solo training games, which is done by starting a new game in training mode and adding A.I. players. This is so you can master the mechanics of the game before playing with and frustrating experienced players. It's upsetting when a new player joins, and doesn't know how to claim a plot, or move around the screen, or install a mule. They usually quit, leaving us to play with an A.I. player, which is quite frankly - HIDEOUS.
It's a very fast way to get blacklisted by regular players. Practice, get to know the controls, and plan for a 90 minute game when you join one, early quitters don't last long around Planet M.U.L.E. (accepting disconnects due to machine or network failures.)
OPTIONS
People have recently complained they can't figure out how to get port forwarding going and therefore, can not play. This is a false impression, which they would know if they had attempted to play without port forwarding.
Port forwarding is an OPTION. If you wish to HOST a game (not just join a game hosted by a bot or other player) you may need to port forward, but if you are not using an NAT router on your internet connection, you may be able to host without port forwarding. In any case, no one needs port forwarding to simply join a game and play. We have MANY players that play without it. They can't host, but most the time, they don't have a need to, there are usually plenty of games available to join.
You also can play against the A.I. in training without port forwarding or even logging in, just click PLAY LOCAL and create a new game in training mode.
I hope this helps settle some confusion about starting up the game.
