I'm TopherGene, and I've been playing MULE back to the C64 days. I was so excited to see that the game had been re-created and online for multi-player use. I signed up this week, downloaded the game, and played a few local games to get the hang of the interface. I played my first game, and was the recipient of a "LOT" of unfriendly tone from the other players for not moving quickly enough, not knowing where the Crystite was (I didn't ask, they just kept responding "None There"), and just for not being an expert of the game on my first try.

I blew it off as I figured they were ultimately just trying to help me understand how they played the game, and how my clicking of a button during production may interfere with their need for an expedient match. air Enough. Today, I logged in to play my 2nd match. Found an open game. Jumped into the game, and [J]oined. Rhodan, who I am sure is very important, as he is currently number 2 in the community rankings. I am merely 2969th. C64 is also ranked well at number 60. When they asked me if I knew how to play. I responded, "Yes". C64 and Rhodan joked about beating one another to the punch for asking that question. I explained that I played the game about 6000 times back in the 80's. Still that was not enough, and they suggested that the #102 ranked Beaster should join instead of me, because in response to my saying "Yes" to the question, the two aforementioned jerks replied "That's what they all say".

Don't sweat it for starters.  Second, Rhodan is actually pretty damn cool.  I know the game basically like you do from back in the C64 days.  The people giving you grief about playing to slow, well, I can kind of understand it.  Basically players like to have the game moving.  Sitting at the summary screen, or production screen not clicking to get on through it is irritating as the game does take a good hour and a half to complete even when its moving along.  Everyone of the Vets here understand that there is a bit of a learning curve when you get started with the online version and those that don't.  Well, lets just say that they are being dickish.  Personally, I don't blow off noobs as im still learning the online tricks myself.


If someone is being a dick.  Tell them they are being a dick.  This isn't an X rated website or game, but its also not G either.  Most everyone playing is well over the age of 18.  I don't take crap from players here and they don't take it from me.

Mule Etiquette

1. Summary page, don't sit there for a month of sunday's unless you have told the other players you need to step away for a minute or two.  Nobody like for a player to end a round and walk away for the next 5 minutes.  That will straight up piss off the nicest of players.

2. Production page, seriously do we really need to sit there and watch each unit being produced.  HOWEVER, I personally am very guilty of letting it run when I gotta take a piss or have a quick smoke.. I personally break this rule.    But screw it, I do like to enjoy myself when im playing the game.

3. Smack talk!  YOU MUST TALK A LITTLE TRASH!  within reason of course. 

4. Sometimes you might be about to start a new game or you have entered a new game and by rights if you are in there and have joined before another player.  By rights you should be entitled to play it.  However, sometimes a group of players are setting up for a rematch or they are all trying to hook up and you just got in there before all four could connect.  It is not out of line for them to ask you to leave, the nice people will ask you to.  Rude people will just kick ya out.

Finally, this game does not have that great of a following.  So, nobody wants or is trying to run off a new player.

wow man I read the chat logs of the two games you played and I think you are reading too much into the messages these guys typed.  I dunno what was all said in the game with Rhodan cause I couldn't find it as you left before it started and it didn't record under your profile.  But I honestly think the guys in the first game you played were being helpful and not hostile as you put it.  and Muleyman did nothing but give you tips all game in the second game you played...  Just try and relax and play don't read too much into what people are typing in the chat window... it's a fun game really, even when you play with the odd loser out there :-)

Veteran players here tend to judge users according to their rank here. You can be a master of MULE and they will still see you as new player as long as your rank is low here. Don't mind them, actually I consider MuleyMan to be worst than Rhodan. But it all depends on the day you meet them. I have some sudden mood changes that can make me look like a psycho cat, specially when I lose several consecutive games in last position. Also, keep in mind that this re-make has some differences with original MULE, so you need to get used to this version before considering yourself a veteran.

Just ignore it, get a "decent" ranking, get back and wipe the floor with them. Some of the highest ranked players consider it to be "unfair" to play VS a low ranked player, so they tend to play around ranked #100 or higher. As I said, don't mind them.

Do training to get the feel of the game.
Veteran players do not want new players coming in and ruining a game by quitting or not understanding basic play @ PM.
Reputation is all important here!  Most here will try to help you do better!
Be nice. Always have 90 minutes to finish a game, NEVER quit. Have fun.
When it stops being so much fun, take a break. Avoid those out to ruin your fun.
Always join my games, since I always let new players get free plots!

Wow, Topher, all I see on anyone part, including Rhodan's is a doubtful attitude, and it's easily understood by anyone with experience here.  What I see from you is a very short fuse and that's exactly why such attitudes come across from the regulars.  You point out Rhodan, I assume because he was the host, but reality is everyone there treated you the same.  You didn't even actually play or let them fully express the concerns.  We respect humbleness, none of us like people that come across like they know it all.

I'll tell ya, I played hundreds of games of Mule as a kid back in the 80s and 90s.  I found out really quickly I didn't know how to play against other players, I played AI style, and the rulebook is completely different.  Took me about 10 games to accept the new style of play.  I've learned to hesitate when I see a new guy come in with 0 games under his belt too, and you did come across a bit cocky, a bad sign that even the nicest of us here tend to be short with.

Noobs are welcome to my games, but they will get a pretty thorough interview typically before I start the game, and when I do play with a newbie, I usually like to play two on two, meaning, two experienced players, playing with two new players, tutoring them as we see weak points, helps keep the feeling of being ganged up on down.

I've not had the best luck with newbies completing an entire game, they get frustrated and leave, even with helpful hints (most of which they completely ignore, often because they are playing full screen and don't see the chat or just don't want to take advice.  You initially strike me as the later.)  That's my two cents.

Topher, you did not stick around long enough and they treated you NO differently than any of the veterans would. We have paid our dues - having had to restart or abandon games because a rookie quits, or finish a game with an AI - Something we all HATE.

I would ask the same questions as Rho (and also express the same prefrence for an experienced player VS NOOB) as I want to enjoy the 1.5 hours of my free time that I invest in each and every game.

To the NEWBIES - it is very simple...READ THE HOW-TO / FORUM, play a couple of training games, try to watch a game with more experienced players, ask respecful questions, listen to the answers (No One really like to be told F**K You for asking legit questions), follow the advice.

DO NOT JUDGE US ALL by 1 or 2 incidents - stick around, play some games with different players and HAVE FUN while you learn.

Most of here at Planet MULE are generally a decent bunch (with the occasional   GRUMPY ASS   - and 1 or 2 real JACKASSES   *see forum) and really do not mind playing with new players BUT, we do reserve the right to sometimes be in the mood for a game with experienced players.
