Title: M.U.L.E. theme song
Post by: Rhialto on December 06, 2009, 04:19
I was anxious to listend to the very first few notes and for 6 seconds I was close to be disapointed because I didn't hear the typical sound of the original but all the remaining was awesome!  It's a hit!  Credits?

Please give us a link to download the MP3!

I'm used to listen to the original song for hours in a loop with my NTSC C-64 which I prefer a lot more than the PAL (slow) version.

Already 5-6 times in a row now that I listen to this new version (while I surf around the place and type this message) and I can say that I'm already used to it but it will be fun to try to speed it up a little...

Haha, the theme is awesome. I was hoping we'd get to hear it. I still find myself humming it from time to time, even to this day :)

Hey!  What is the very 1st thing I did this morning after I woke up?

Got to the computer, clicked M.U.L.E. and cranked up the volume to the max and dancing on the song with a smile on my face!  I feel like a child again (I'm 38)!

Really good remake!

I can't wait for the composer to show up...  while I was waiting to fall asleep last night after listening to the theme about 10 times in a loop I had the idea to ask him for speedier version too as a bonus for all the NTSC fans in the world.  Since that was probably done with Reason or something, it would be a snap to uptempo it a little.

Please give us a link to download the MP3!
Open the 'data.jar' file with your favorite archiver (such as winzip or winrar). The music is in Ogg/Vorbis format in the 'music' subfolder inside that .jar file.

Thanks!  I thought the team would be more present with the launch of their baby and that they would reply much faster to such fan request.  Anyway!

For all those how are used to play M.U.L.E. on a NTSC computer, there is the theme song that match our speedier 60Hz computer.

mule_theme_NTSC.ogg (http://www.rhialto.com/_shared/mule_theme_NTSC.ogg)

Let me know if you like (or are you all PAL folks here?)   ;)

I agree!  For the amount of stuff they're getting thrown at them, I can't believe they're responding to anything!

Well, I let a few days pass and yet they never jumped in and say something like:

  • Hey glad you like the theme remake!
  • The credits goes to Mr. X who was also a fan or the original M.U.L.E. in the past and bla bla bla
  • We are also glad to provide fans with a download link (we understand that not everyone is skilled extracting it from the .jar file)

See?  But no worrie, I understand that the priority is fixing bugs and helping those with problems.

Speaking of problem, the 'Preview' feature of this forum does not work, it keep saying 'Fetching preview...' and nothing happen.  I'm using Firefox 3.5.x

I hope to read more on all the story around the remake...

The remix was made by Jonas Andersson from Audio Alliance, a company located in the same town as Turborilla. They made all the sounds for the game as well. He was glad to hear the nice feedback and maybe he'll do an up-tempo version for you NTSC guys ;)

Made my own remix of the theme a couple years back.  Polished it up and put it on YouTube to celebrate this fine occasion.  It's a more literal remix of the original theme than what is on Planet M.U.L.E.  Enjoy (finally got the kinks worked out):

I love the new theme song.  I really wish it continued to play beyond just the log in screen.  perhaps keep playing till you join a game?

Consider this another upvote for how brilliant the song is. Really awesome job sticking to the pattern of the original, but updating it perfectly.

Hello Melanie,

Your message is addressed to?  Is that the reason why nobody from the team posted a download link for all the fans who wanted to listen to it anytime in a loop without starting the game?

Does my NTSC version is fine with you?  Should I remove the download link?

Are you in a PAL or NTSC region btw?

Regards,
Rhi

Saying that, and since you asked I don't see a problem with your link...my attorney may advise me differently, but for now it's fine.

In fact it's the original but 60Hz instead of 50Hz...  I still don't know if the original M.U.L.E. was programmed on a PAL or NTSC computer.  I would say PAL because the remake here is the slower version and that you must have approved it like it is.  I guess I could search a bit and find the country where you it started all...  or you could tell me.   ;)

Happy Holidays!

Melanie,

Thanks to you and the rest of your family for making this happen. I spent countless hours with your father's games as a kid. You probably already knew that his work meant a lot to many people, but I figured it wouldn't hurt to reiterate the point :)

Hello Melanie!

From the Wikipedia article : M.U.L.E. was developped for the Atari 400/800 first.

Can you tell me if the original theme song was playing at that speed : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z48FWWCG4dU or at that speed : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QWvQQuLPmzg

It has to be noted that the original song was playing faster on a NTSC (60Hz) C-64 computer than on a PAL (50Hz) C-64 computer.  I'm still trying to figure out what was the speed of the original...   ;D

The song remake for Planet M.U.L.E. is playing like if those who made it heard it from a PAL computer (or they listened it from a YouTube clip that was playing the slow version.  I don't know if that speed was intentional or not.

Whatever the speed of the original was, I'm used to listen to it on a NTSC computer and that's why I made the speedier version available.  I hope you better understand why I started that thread.

Cheers!
Rhi

It is closer to the 2nd link, but still sounds about a beat to slow.

I really like the way the theme song was re-done.  It's updated and modern, but doesn't lose the feel of the original.
At the same time, I'd love to see an option to hear the original C64 version.  8-bit nostalgia!

Good idea but the game was released on different platform and sounded a bit different on each...  glad it's pretty easy to find the original SID when I want to listen to it, thanks to the HVSC.

And you, used to listen to the PAL or NTSC version?  Maybe I should start a poll, I'm just curious.

The Atari 800 version definitely played at the speed of the first clip (the faster one)

I really like the Aerobics in the jungle mix, but my favorite rearrangement is the Bitblaster mix from 8 Bit Weapon, which is KICKA**.  I have also heard a variation of the Bitblaster mix, also by the same arranger (Seth Sternberger).  This bitblaster mix is actually on a commercial album, but you can see about it here:

http://www.8bitweapon.com/music.htm

I remember finding the earlier variation of the bitblaster mix here from the old WoM web site here:

I've always preferred the Atari800 version of the theme song, because it had an extra layer of harmony to make the sound fuller.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2EubKmtFBXY (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2EubKmtFBXY)

Listen at 0:45, for example--there's that middle voice doing the triplet rhythm in between the bass's quarters and the straight eighths up high.  I haven't heard that captured in any of the modern remixes or updates.  :(

The version of the theme included with 1.2 is nice, but it could be that much better with the extra harmony!  ;)
